The infusions pumps that V.E.T.S have available to them are probably the most utilised pieces of equipment.
These pumps are routinely used whenever an animal is being given an intravenous fluid or intravenous drug that needs to be given slowly over a set time period. They allow accurate volumes of fluid to be given over a set period of time at a set rate. It is therefore possible to give a large volume quickly or a small volume slowly and still have confidence that it will be accurately delivered.
The reliability of the infusion pumps means that often animals get better more quickly as they are getting the required volume of fluid - they are not being accidentally overdosed or more likely under dosed.
Using the infusion pumps also means that there is a greater level of safety built into intravenous infusions.
The use of these infusion pumps allows us to accurately provide constant rate infusions of analgesia (pain relief), certain intravenous antibiotics, supplemented infusions and sedatives if required. Our infusion pumps can also be used with blood products or for specialised intravenous feeding.
What did we do before we had them?
