If your pet needed surgery he or she would be taken here. To maximise the safety of your pet, they will be kept warm and constantly monitored by a qualified veterinary nurse. To aid this monitoring your pet will be connected to machines that will constantly monitor their blood pressure, heart rate and rhythm (a constant ECG trace is obtained) and how saturated with oxygen their blood is.
Emergency surgery often, but not exclusively, involves abdominal surgery. Common conditions that we deal with are removal of objects stuck in the stomach or intestines, emergency removal of the spleen, twists of the intestine, serious womb infection (pyometra) and twisted stomach (commoner in larger breeds of dogs).
As in E.R. everyone in theatre is required to wear ‘scrubs’, hat and mask, and the veterinary surgeon (and anyone else helping with the operation) also wears sterile gloves and a sterile gown.
